Below the belt

As competitive as our team to raise funds and awareness for cancer?

We go BELOW the belt… to RAISE cancer awareness

Unfortunately, in the world we all live, cancer has become more and more prominent. If not yourself or an immediate loved one, someone you know, or their loved ones have been affected by the disease. In fact, the latest statement from the Cancer Council is 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by the time they’re 85.

Our team at Sane Event Group have had the privilege of working with ANZUP (the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group) who are recognised nationally and internationally for their contribution to genitourinary clinical trials. Through our work with this amazing group we truly have had our eyes opened by number people affected by below the belt cancers. Did you know?

Alarmingly, 27,000+ people are diagnosed with below the belt cancers in Australia every year, which is evidenced by statistics listed on the Cancer Council website. When we sit down and assess the numbers is it clear that cancers “below the belt” form a large share of those affected.

Let’s look at some stats:

  • In 2019 it’s estimated there will be 3,814 new cases of kidney cancer diagnosed in Australia.
  • Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is responsible for approximately 90% of kidney cancer cases.
  • 3,168 cases of bladder cancer are estimated to be diagnosed in 2019 – this affects more males than females and generally targets those aged 60 and over.
  • Of course, found only in men there is estimated to be 19,508 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in 2019 and 852 new cases of testicular cancer (usually occurring in men aged between 25 – 45 years) – sadly, it’s estimated there will be 23 deaths from the disease in 2019.

These hard-hitting stats outline why ‘below the belt’ cancer needs to be a focus of research and clinical trials – collectively we can raise awareness and help support medical researcher in finding a cure.

How can you help?

From July 18-22 our team at the ANZUP Annual Scientific Meeting organised in conjunction with the Sane Event Group, a Cycling Challenge was held to raise awareness of the upcoming ANZUP Belw the Belt Pedalthon in Sydney. Bringing together those from all industries, health and otherwise – the Below the Belt Pedalthon not only raises awareness, but it allows the opportunity to raise much needed funds that support medical research. Individually we may not feel that we can make an impact, but together we certainly can. What better way to help someone else with their health, than using your own!

How does it work?

Teaming up in groups of 6 – participants pedal for 3 hours , riding as many laps as possible.
